A painting of the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam by Martin Monnickendam
Painter Martin Monnickendam was born in Amsterdam in 1874 to a Jewish family. He studied painting in the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, and later in École des Arts et Métiers in Paris. This painting was donated by Yair Rachamim. His maternal grandparents apparently purchased the painting from Monnickendam’s daughters in Holland in 1947. A year later, his mother brought it with her to Kineret, Israel. The painter, Monnickendam, is depicted in the painting, facing the viewer.
